Two Little Monkeys...

Jumping on the bed!

(well, make that four if you count their sock monkey friends, too)

(maybe someday, we will have four little monkeys of our own!)

(but not anytime soon, for reals :)

(Sawyer flashback: just about a year ago...wow, a lot happens in a year!)

My two little monkeys have had "the cold that never ends" for several weeks now. Just when I think it's getting better...more drippy noses and coughs ensue. So, we've made a habit of taking an "aromatherapy" bath after nap time to soothe a bit of the stuffy noses and sore throats. Usually, after the bath, we end up jumping on pillows and beds and running naked down the hall. (yes, all of us, ha ha ha, you think I'm kidding don't you?)

Anyways, kind of random. But ya gotta find some way to have fun even if you get your nose wiped or sucked out a few thousand times per day.

I know this is going around - so to anyone else who has the cold that never seems to end - here's to better, healthy (and can I add warmer?) days ahead! We are ready for Spring!

ps-I am in love with Aspen's curls.
pss- and her cute little bum!

the good stuff

When you're one, all of a sudden you get the go-ahead to try some new things (first being cake and ice-cream!) The week of her birthday, Aspen was thrilled to try a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, just like her big bro. loves to eat. She is quite the little lady with her table manners. She prefers to use utencils - or motions for a nearby adult to put her food into her mouth for her - as I guess she just doesn't like either the texture, or getting her hands dirty. I think mostly it's the texture of certain foods - because others (like goldfish crackers) she loves to stuff in her mouth. She also loves to suck on apples. I cut them up really small, and she just kind of gnaws on them for 5 minutes. Must like the juice. Silly girl. She eats like a little bird! A cute one, at least!

One

I owe this girl some photos.
(warning: this is a long post)

We've been taking turns being sick at our house for the past several weeks, and while I was very tempted to drag her outside for some photos, I just couldn't do it. Not with the runny nose, and watery eyes. Poor baby. Those photos will just have to wait (I'm already over doing it as is, right?) Anyway, a week or two back in between drippy noses, we had a nice sunny afternoon and the light was good enough to get a few simple ones of my one-year-old girl. Her best friend, Ruby, gave her the pretty headband for her birthday (her talented Mommy made it ;) And the hat was her brothers. These may be it for her one-year-milestone-marking-photos - or with any luck we will all get healthy and have a nice, dry, warm day when I will do a few more for her. We will see. I kinda like how simple these turned out, anyway - that's generally our style...

simple. natural. beauty.

Aspen,

After your first couple of months, I was truly going to swear you would be a blue-eyed girl. But no. Just like your brother, your eyes took a very long time to "settle" and you ended up with these gorgeous and very unique hazel/gray eyes. They are so beautiful - and oh those looooong lashes. You are such a pretty girl.

Growing up, you may get called "cute". (I was always "cute" and really wanted to be "beautiful" or "pretty"). Well, you are cute. But, just so you know, you are more than cute.
You are so so pretty.
A True Beauty.

I will never forget a few weeks ago when we were in the airport, I was wearing you and running around to different places grabbing a quick "lunch" for us to eat while we waited to board our next flight. A woman came up to me, put her hand on my shoulder, and said "You are effortlessly beautiful. Look at you - wearing a baby and a skirt, hands completely full - so calm" It was about the best compliment of my life. No makeup. Hair tied up in a knot. Yes, a skirt - and flip flops. What she saw wasn't my lack of make up. She saw the kind of beauty that comes when you are busy with what you love. I hope you always know that true beauty doesn't come from any kind of bottle - I hope you learn to be comfortable and confident in your own skin. You'll probably be better at makeup and all that girly jazz than I am - most women are - just know that you don't need it to be pretty. You already are :)

I hope you always look at yourself and see the beauty not only in your sparkly eyes or curly golden hair - but the beauty within you. You are so pure and beautiful from the inside, out.

You are such a happy girl.
Your smile lights up your whole face.

This past week, you took your first steps.
Oh, the joy!
You looove singing, dancing, and music.
It cracks me up big time when we are driving somewhere listening to music, and you are "singing" along and Sawyer says, rather loudly "Aspen - stop singing, they are singing (and he points to the speakers)I'm sure we'll hear that often as you continue to develop your singing voice.

You also love books, and reading.
Lately, your favorites are Moo, Baa, La La La (it's just darling when you say those three words - especially the La La La), Down by the Bay, Hand Hand Fingers Thumb (dum ditty dum, you like to drum), and Silly Sally.

You say Mama, Dada, and a few other words - one of our favorites is when you do your monkey sounds. You sign a few, too. But the best is that when you wake up in the morning (in our bed, usually) you roll over, open your eyes, put your nose right in front of my face and say "HA!" which is how you say "hi".

You and your brother are developing such a fun relationship. You absolutely love crawling up onto his little bed and you sit there together, looking at books. Although, since you can stand up and all - now you get up there and you both try to be little monkeys and jump on the bed. I don't mind as long as I'm right there :) You little squirts! You totally egg your brother on, and laugh at everything he does. I love it, even though I know it will probably lead to mischief, eventually.

Another love, and I mean, you do a happy little dance every night about this - you LOVE your bath.
Some days, you beg to take a shower and a bath. Pretty much anytime you can, you want in that water. And you're learning to splash back at your bro.

Things you aren't as fond of...
baby food. Gave it up a while back because all you want is to be a big girl at the table with us. You sit in a booster seat and haven't used a high chair for several months. You like a placemat, your own utencils, and a big girl cup (I have to help with the cup). You looove peaches and fruit. You loooove Greek Yogurt (as do I!) But you're kinda a picky eater. You point to what you want and shake your head at what you don't. I sometimes worry you don't eat enough...but you make up for it with Mommy's milk.

You love to nurse.
Lately, you will basically start pointing at my shirt, then start grabbing at it and looking in - you know, like "give me those things, now!" We are not in a rush to give up our nursing relationship. I love that it gives us special time together and that I can still nourish you in that special way.

Sleep.
Well, you've always been kind of a party animal at night.
You do take nice naps - you're starting to move toward consolidating the two into one, which in lots of ways, will make life easier. You have transitioned well to your crib for naps. Nighttime is still a little tricky - with the shared room and all - but doing better day by day. You go down to sleep in your crib, but generally at some point - you join us back in our bed in the wee morning hours.

Alright, speaking of sleep - I am a very poor example of healthy sleep habits. I think I need to reform my ways if I want to teach you healthy sleep habits (ie writing blog posts at 2am?)

With that said, and lots of rambling here, I will sign off. I just wanted to write a few things down while I was thinking of them. Next project: working on your first year book. That said...

On to toddlerhood, little one!

Our V-day Feast

For the record, this is how our Valentine's Day went:

Daddy made us Blueberry Crunch Coffeecake for breakfast
(he gave me some beautiful earrings)
(we gave the kids some bath tub soapy paints)
We gave him a ride to work
Me and the kids went to Nature Preschool, in the pouring rain
(I tell you, we have a class of troopers)
We jumped in huge mud puddles
Found refuge under canopys of large trees
Sang songs, read stories
Played games and did a scavenger hunt
Then retreated to the visitor's center for a little party
We came home, soaked and chilled.
We took a bubble bath (yes, all 3 of us)
We gave those new soapy paints a try
We lunched, we napped...and then...

I cooked. A LOT.

I believe I've mentioned before that I'm not especially fond of the kitchen?

Well...on Valentine's Day...I spent a lot of time there,
(just for my man).

The menu:

Authentic Thai Chicken Satay
w/ peanut dipping sauce
Fresh, steamed artichokes
w/melted butter
Martinelli's (have to have some kind of bubbly)
Chocolate-dipped Strawberries
Chocolate cake & ice-cream

We were gluttons. We were stuffed. It was DELISH.

(and I gave him a gift)
(and he gave me ANOTHER gift)
(we don't usually do gifts)
(we put the kids to bed)
(we danced...in the dark...to this song...)

Maybe I should cook more often!?!

This Little Piggie...

Okay. So I LOVE that she can have little piggies in her hair now. Sawyer does, too. He often says "Mommy, let's put piggies on her". He obviously thinks they're cute. Who wouldn't?

So, this girl is in need of some "one year photos". Poor thing, pretty much the evening after her birthday, she got sick. We have all been sick the past week or so. Sawyer had croup. they both had runny noses. Now Jacob has a bad cough. I swear it's just going around because almost every one I know has been sick a couple of times this last month. So, we hope for spring :)

Anyway, I didn't want to drag the girl out and force her to smile when she felt all sickly, so I'll have to get on those photos soon (enough). But I did snap this one a couple of days back when we were playing. Note the little car in her hands. Yes, she loves those baby dolls she got for her birthday - but she still has a soft spot for her brother's cars. I mean, she has been surrounded by birth, right? So, she really and truly seems to enjoy playing cars and trains with her bro. She has even started making noises and giggles hysterically when she tries to say "choo choo". She got her own train (Emily) from Grandpa and Grandma Carter. And Santa left a car (Sally) in her stocking. Perhaps she'll end up a tom boy? I was ;)

On another note...I have kept going back and forth about this for a long time, but I think I am weighing more on the "just do it" side -- which is, I think I am going to figure out a way to just consolidate my two blogs (our family/my photography). I feel it would simplify my life a bit. Pretty much it would mean that I wouldn't have to ever double post, that I could not have to upkeep two blog spots, that I could be slightly more candid on the one hand, and slightly less inclined to be so personal on another...only it won't necessarily be my family or just my business blog - I want it to be sort of a crossover. Because, really - how long will I keep my business going? I don't know. I started it for fun, not for it to become a stressful job. I am scaling back a little bit this year with my sessions. It has been such a compliment that it has done well and that by word of mouth alone I actually have people that search and choose me to photograph their loved ones. I love that! But I also love my own family...hence my search to find a bit of a better balance, and I feel like part of it would be maintaining one instead of two blogs. Sound okay? If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to comment. If you read this blog, do you ever take a peek at my Little Red Wagon blog as well? Are there things you like or don't like about each? Truly, let me know. I am going to think about this like I'm starting a new "me place". You know, that place you go and you feel comfortable because it's just you. This particular blog started out as "us" but then Jacob sort of felt like I took over and we are interested in blogging about different things. Mostly, I wanted to document our family in words and pictures. Sometimes, though, considering I know that there are "strangers" who read this blog, perhaps some of the things I share should be kept a bit more private. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Now, I am up way too late (again) and I need to to hit the hay and get some good sleep. We've got sports class in the morning - and running lines in the gym with 15 2-3 year olds (while wearing the baby) takes a lot of energy ;)I better rest up.

Aspen's nest

Welcome to the little spot where Aspen sweetly slumbers...

I've been working on doing the kids' shared room for a loooong time.

Since Aspen is now one, that means she gets to finally sleep in her beautiful crib. I sometimes wonder why we even have cribs in our family - we have chosen to share sleep (aka "co-sleep") with each of our children the first year.

Well, at least that gave me plenty of time to make bedding! I have to admit, I had *cute enough* bedding from Pottery Barn that I had got a while back on sale. But once I had her, and thought about the shared room of a boy and a girl, I just didn't want to feel pigeon-holed into "yellow and green". Ya know?

So, I opted for yellow and gray. And white. And maybe a splash of pink in her corner ;)

I'm still not quite done - just a few details left and then I'll give a tour of their room. Sawyer's side is awfully cute as well ;)
Mostly, I am waiting for a print to arrive, and trying ever-so-hard to decide which prints I should (if any) hang on the walls. I think it's kind of weird to put up a lot of prints of yourself by your bed. Maybe that's just me? But maybe one or two...? Ahh, decisions! You would think since I take a gazillion pictures my walls would be covered, right? Nope. I can never decide! If anyone can help me, here, please feel free!

Okay, without further ado, here is her new cozy little nest...

In case you're wondering:

I made the poms with fabric (the big one took FOREVER!)
I got the print off of Etsy (love that Katie Daisy!)
The sheet is a hand-me-down from PB Kids - soooo soft
The monkey is from Santa
The bumper I made from cutting up a white coverlet I found at Target, then turning it into a bumper and finishing it off with flannel-backed satin for the trim and ties
The bedskirt is from a sheet I cut up - found the set at Ross and made Sawyer's duvet out of the same sheet. And trim to finish it, just ropey stuff I found at the fabric store.
The white quilt was made from the same coverlet and trim,
and the pretty blankie is Amy Butler fabric on one side, pink Minky on the other, and bound with satin.
I wish I could fit in her crib and take a nice, looooong nap myself, it is just soooo soft and cozy.

When I write that down it seems so simple.

But it took me days. And hours. Weeks. And months. To. Do.

So far, the transition from our bed to crib is going relatively well. She starts out in the crib and comes into our bed later - but the time gets longer each night. Last night she came into our bed around 4am. We believe training ourselves to be night time parents is easier than sleep training our babies. Sometimes, they just need to be cuddled, ya know?

Here's to sweet dreams, Miss Aspen!

ps-anyone who has two young kids who successfully share a room - any tips? they are totally welcome! (ie Sawyer now naps in the pack n play in our room so we can be consistent with the crib. He thinks it's da bomb :)

One Candle

The one thing I forgot at the actual "party" -

the candle.

yup.

of all the things I had to transport to the venue,

it was one candle I forgot. oops.

Actually, it was fine. That made her "real" birthday more exciting, when she got to blow out the candle. Sawyer was excited to help, too. There is something really fun and magical about turning out all of the lights and then singing to the dim light of birthday candles...of watching the birthday girl's eyes...of making wishes in your heart since they only come true if they're a secret...

Her eyes did light up, I tell ya.

And then it was dark.

and we ate that mini, pink, ruffly cake -

with ice cream, of course.

Sawyer then got to be the helper of the opening of gifts, another task he was happy to help with.

And this was the icing on the cake.

She already loooves her babies. And it was so fun to watch her be all proud and big girl like, pushing the stroller.

It was a good day. We finished celebrating our girl by watching home videos from the day she was born until present. Amazing how much they grow and change in one year. We also couldn't help but gasp at how little Sawyer was when she was born - only 6 months older than she is now. Yikes. He was a baby himself. The wonderful thing is, they are growing into such great buddies. They bust up laughing together quite frequently now. A few friends have told me that the closeness in age is hard at first, but later on it pays off when they become best friends.

It's been a wonderful year. We are excited to see all of the new and fun things Aspen will do in her second year! Happy Birthday, dear Aspen Jane - we are so lucky you chose us as your family!

The Party

Our cute one-year-old!

Go here to see a little bit of her party! (I am too tired to post all of the pics, those will have to just go in her book. So...I had this picture in my head and I became obsessed with making it real. The party planning was both fun and stressful and all of the details took me a lot of work. Thanks to Jacob who surely thinks I'm nuts - for being my helper into the wee hours before the party, just to make sure I had everything I needed and that it was all "just right". It was more that just right - it was beautiful. So, if you weren't there - well, take a look at the pics and you can imagine being there to celebrate with us!

*Ah Hem. As it turns out, both kids got an extra special gift after all the celebrating: sick. So we're laying low on this sunny day :) I'll post a few more pics from her "real" birthday when I get the chance ;)
